If you are moving to Zurich from abroad, one of the first things you need to do after signing your lease is register with the city. Switzerland takes this seriously. You have 14 days from your move-in date to complete the process, and missing that window can cause problems with your residence permit and other administrative steps down the line.
Where to register
Registration happens at your local Kreisbuero (district office). Zurich is divided into 12 Kreise, and you register at the one that covers your new address. If you live in Kreis 4 near Langstrasse, you go to the Kreisbuero 4. If you are in Seefeld (Kreis 8), you go to Kreisbuero 8. If you are in Kreis 3 (Wiedikon), it is Kreisbuero 3.
You can book an appointment online through the city of Zurich website. Walk-ins are sometimes possible, but appointments move faster and avoid long waits, especially during peak moving seasons in spring and autumn.
Documents you need to bring
The Kreisbuero will expect you to have the following ready:
- Valid passport or national identity card (for EU/EFTA citizens)
- Signed rental contract (Mietvertrag) for your Zurich address
- Proof of employment or an employment contract, or proof of enrolment if you are a student
- Aufenthaltsbewilligung (residence permit) if you already have one, or the application confirmation
- Passport-sized photographs (biometric format, two copies recommended)
- Marriage certificate or family booklet if registering with a spouse or children
If you are a non-EU citizen, you will also need documentation related to your visa and work permit. The Kreisbuero staff will check everything and enter your details into the Einwohnerkontrolle, the population registry system.
What happens during registration
The process itself is straightforward. You hand over your documents, the clerk enters your information into the system, and you receive an Aufenthaltsbestaetigung (confirmation of residence). This document is important. You will need it to open a Swiss bank account, set up health insurance, and handle other administrative tasks.
For EU/EFTA citizens with employment, you will typically receive an Aufenthaltsbewilligung B (residence permit B), which is valid for five years and tied to your employment. Non-EU citizens receive the permit category that matches their visa type.
The whole appointment usually takes 20 to 40 minutes if your documents are in order. If anything is missing, you may be asked to return, which costs you another appointment slot and more waiting time.
After registration
Once registered, a few things follow quickly:
- Health insurance: You have three months from your registration date to arrange mandatory Swiss health insurance (Grundversicherung). Do not wait until the last week.
- Tax registration: The city will automatically notify the cantonal tax office. You will receive tax correspondence based on your registered address.
- AHV/social security: If employed, your employer handles AHV contributions, but your registration confirms your residence for the system.
If you move within Zurich, for example from Kreis 4 to Kreis 3, you need to update your registration at the new Kreisbuero within 14 days of the internal move as well. Moving out of the canton or out of Switzerland requires a formal deregistration (Abmeldung).
Common mistakes to avoid
Many expats underestimate the 14-day rule. If you are staying in temporary accommodation while apartment hunting, you are not yet registered, and that is fine. But the moment you sign a lease and receive the keys, the clock starts. Bring everything on the first visit. Returning for a missing document is one of the most common frustrations new arrivals face.
Also, make sure your rental contract clearly states your name as the tenant. Subletting arrangements without proper documentation can make registration difficult or impossible at the Kreisbuero.
Quick answers
FAQ for this topic
How long do I have to register after moving to Zurich?
You must register at your local Kreisbuero within 14 days of moving in. Missing this deadline can result in fines and complications with your Aufenthaltsbewilligung.
Can I register in Zurich without a rental contract?
No. You need a signed rental contract or a landlord confirmation to complete your registration. Temporary accommodation like a hotel does not count for permanent registration.
What is the difference between the Kreisbuero and the Einwohnerkontrolle?
The Kreisbuero is the district office where you physically go to register. The Einwohnerkontrolle is the population registry system that manages all resident data across the city.
Do EU citizens need an Aufenthaltsbewilligung to register?
EU/EFTA citizens with a work contract can register and will receive an Aufenthaltsbewilligung B automatically. You still need to bring proof of employment and your passport to the Kreisbuero.
