Kreis 3, commonly known as Wiedikon, is one of Zurich’s most liveable residential districts. It sits just south-west of the city centre and offers a balance that many expats look for: enough neighbourhood life to feel settled, enough space to breathe, and a quick commute into the centre when you need it.
Birmensdorferstrasse is the main commercial street running through the area. You will find everyday shops, bakeries, cafes, and a growing number of restaurants that reflect the district’s increasingly international population. It is practical rather than flashy, which suits the neighbourhood’s overall character.
Families do well here. Schools are well-regarded, and there are several parks and green spaces within easy reach. The residential streets are noticeably quieter than the central districts, and apartments tend to be more spacious for the same price bracket. If you have children or simply want more room, Kreis 3 gives you options that Kreis 1 or Kreis 4 cannot match.
Transport connections are strong. Tram 9 and Tram 14 link the district to the city centre in roughly 10 minutes. The S-Bahn network provides fast connections to Zurich Hauptbahnhof and beyond, which is useful for anyone commuting to other parts of the canton or neighbouring cities. Cycling infrastructure is solid too.
Rent for a 1-bedroom flat starts around CHF 2,100, with 2-bedroom apartments closer to CHF 3,100. These figures sit slightly above the city average but reflect the quality of housing and the neighbourhood’s growing popularity among professionals and families.
The main advantage of Kreis 3 is the combination of residential calm with genuine urban convenience. You are not stuck in a suburb, but you are also not dealing with the noise and density of the city core. For expats who want a practical, well-connected base without sacrificing quality of life, Wiedikon is a strong option.
